Khumjung is one of the charming villages  located at 3790 meter above sea level in Sagarmatha national park, Everest region. It is a typical Sherpa village neighboring with Kunde village at 3800m. If you are looking for crowd less places with amazing views of mountains then Khumjung is the best place to stay during Everest base camp trek. Exploring Khumjung village during rest day in Namche bazaar worth it. 

Khumjung is the best place for entertaining with mountain view, local culture and Sherpa lifestyle. The stone framed farmland, traditional houses, monasteries and mountains have made Khumjung a great place.

How to reach Khumjung?

We can reach Khumjung in two hours from Namche bazaar. The distance between Khumjung to Namche is around 3 km. Thus, we can reach Khumjung easily from Namche. Alternately, Heli is another option to reach Khumjung village directly from Lukla. It takes three days to trek Khumjung from Lukla.

Day 1: Flight to Lukla and trek to Phakding

Day 2: Trek to Namche

Day 3: Hike to Khumjung 

 We can have a panoramic view of Mt. Everest. Lhotse, Cholache, Thamserkhu and many more peaks of Mahalangur range from Khumjung valley.

Khumjung school

Khumjung secondary school was established before in 1961 AD by Sir Edmung Hillary. It is also known as Hillary school under the name of its founder. The school was handed over to Government in 1974 AD. It was promoted to Lower secondary level after 20 years of establishment whereas it becomes Secondary school in 1985 AD with 10 students involved in SLC examination. Currently there are 300 students and 22 staffs involved in running the school. The contribution of Sir Edmund Hillary is immortal in development of literate in Khumbu Pasang Lhamu rural Municipality. The school is running in its 63 year and has played significant role in development of education in Everest region. 

Kunde hospital

Kunde hospital is one of the attractions point in Khumjung valley that is providing health services to Khumbu district. The hospital was established in 1966 AD by Sir Edmund Hillary after his Everest expedition in 1953 AD. It was built under the effort of overseas volunteer, local people, the Himalayan trust and Sir Edmund Hillary foundation Canada. The hospital is an important healthcare center for local people and trekkers in Everest region.

Everest view hotel

Everest view hotel is a unique hotel situated at 3867 m. It has set Guinness world record in 2004 AD due to being the highest hotel in the world. The hotel was established in 1971 AD by Sir Edmund Hillary. It is the luxury hotel in Everest base camp trekking route that is increasing its fame every year. 

The route to Everest view hotel passed through Khumjung village. The hotel is around 200m distance from Khumjung village that is around 15-minute walk. Everest trekkers visit Everest view hotel from Namche or Khumjung village to explore amazing view of Mount Everest with coffee. Trekking to Everest view hotel is the best means of acclimatization. Going to the hotel and returning to Namche helped a lot to adjust your body in higher altitude.

Khumjung monastery

Khumjung monastery is in the base of mountain in Khumjung valley at an altitude of 3801 meter above sea level in Kunde village. The establishment of monastery dates to 400 years ago and remain as a landmark of Khumjung valley. It is overwhelmed with pristine Buddhist culture where we can see Buddhist sculpture and arts.  It is popularly known as Khumjung Gompa where Buddhist worship and meditate for eternal peace. The colorful prayers flag with mantras tends to purify air and fill with positive energy. 

The Yeti scalp of Khumjung monastery is historical evidence of the existence of Yeti in Everest region. The scalp resembles to goat-antelope and remain unable to pass inspection may be due to being rare Himalayan fauna ever found in other part of the world. 

Sherpa culture

Khumjung is a Sherpa village overwhelmed with Sherpa culture and tradition. We can encounter buddhist norms and values bonding the people to create harmony between the people living in the Everest’s shadow. They celebrate Lhosar, Dumje, Mani Rimdu and decorate monasteries and Gomba during festivals with prayer flags. 

Mountain view

Khumjung valley offers the first view of Mount Everest. We can encounter the mindblowing view of Mt. Everest, Nupste, Lhotse, Lhotse Shar, Ama Dablam, Tabuche, Cholache, Kusum Khangaru, Khangteka, and Thamsherkhu from Khumjung. 

Accomodation

Khumjung is one of the best villages for accommodation in Everest region. We can get hot water shower and luxury accomodation in Everest view hotel. Clean rooms, delicous food, wood burning stove and charging facility are common in tea houses of Khumjung.

Food

We can have delicious local Nepali food along with some western food in Khumjung village. The homestay or tea houses in the village provide three meals a day. The breakfast items include tea/coffee, porridge, pasta, milk, buckwheat chapati, bread etc. Similarly, mo:mo, noodles, pasta, Nepali thali etc are available for lunch and dinner. Buckwheat Dhido,  champaporridge and potato chapati are the most common local food in Khumjung village. 

Agriculture

Khumjung valley includes villages and agricultural farmland. Villagers sow Buckwheat and potato in their field as the major crop in Everest region. Rice planting is not possible in Khumjung valley.

Khumjung village is the local Sherpa community where we can explore the mind-blowing view of Mt. Everest with Mahalangur range. It is the hiking spot from Namche Bazaar. The terraced farmland, domestic flora and fauna, decorated houses and Sherpa culture worth it.
