Tengboche monastery is a popular place in Everest region, Solukhumbu district, Province 1, Nepal. It is located at 3867 m above sea level, which is around 9.6 km from Namche bazaar. Tengboche is an ancient monastery that has played a significant role in preserving and promoting Buddhism. It is the oldest and largest monastery in the Everest region, which is the attraction point on the EBC trekking route.

Trekking from Namche is the best route to reach Tengboche Monastery, Nepal. We should reach Lukla and trek to Phakding, followed by Namche Bazar to reach Tengboche. It is the final destination of the Everest Panorama Trek

We can observe the Mani Rimdu festival in Tengboche Monastery. It is the greatest festival of Sherpa’s and Lama’s on which they pray to spread peace in the world. Possibly all Buddhists of the Everest region gather in the Tengboche monastery for five days and celebrate the festival. Playing the music, traditional dance with masks, prayers, and feasts, on which visiting the monastery, the Buddhist chant, and enjoying the feast are major activities of the Mani Rimdu festival.

Largest monastery in Khumbu region

Tengboche monastery is the largest monastery in the Khumbu region, which was established in 1916 AD by Lama Gulu. It is a landmark in the Everest region that reflects the culture and tradition of the Everest region. Rongbuk monastery in Tibet is known as the mother monastery of Tengboche monastery. 

History 

Tengobche Monastery has a 108-year history till date, 2024 AD. It was built in 1916 AD by Lama Gulu. The monastery has faced earthquakes and fires in 1934 AD and 1989 AD, respectively. The renovation of the monastery after each disaster has retrieved its beauty. The monastery lost its precious art, statues, murals, and carvings due to firing. Lama Sangwa Dorje and Nawang Tenzing Jangpo have made a big contribution to renovation. Different INGOs, like the Himalayan Trust, the American Himalayan Heritage Foundation, and different other international identities, have donated to rebuild the monastery after the disaster.
